I've decided to produce "Comparing Submarine Forces" (raw numbers being simplistic) as the first Special Report. I'll send it on July 15, 2021 to those readers who have kindly donated.
Comparing submarines, whose effectiveness is enhanced by other force multipliers, is a broad but central issue.
Comparisons can entertain a multiplicity of factors and indicies (hat tip to economists who blazed the trial) rather than just raw submarine numbers. Raw numbers are too often a fall back of those who know little about subs. I'll keep things fairly simple and understandable.
Raw number comparisons usually focus on the US sub force vs China's, North Korea's (NK) and sometimes Iran's.
But there is so much more, eg:
- US vs Russia
- China vs the smaller Quads (ie. India's + Japan's + Australia's) and the undeclared Quad
Number 5 (Singapore's).
- SK vs NK
- SK vs Japan (not quite enemies, but Japan's subs watch SK, and vice versa, closely)
- Indonesia's 10? Nagapasa-class (and some SK modified 214s owned by Indonesia?) in
2030
vs
Australia's 6 (or maybe 5 (with HMAS Collins cannibalized for spare parts) aging Collins
in 2030 (still un-supplemented by any Attack class subs until 2035)
- any of the pure nuclear submarine powers (eg. US, UK, France)
vs
conventional sub powers (Pakistan, Germany, Israel vs Iran, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands,
Australia, SK, Japan)
vs
mixed nuclear/conventional sub powers (Russia, China and India).
- comparing a conventional sub with nuclear missiles (eg. owned by NK, Israel, Pakistan,
India and even Iran (by 2030?)) with a conventional sub that merely has conventional
explosive missiles
I'll identify a range of central variables, "countables" ("quantifiables" sounding a bit too academic). I'll end with A (or THE) key and singly, most useful, countable at the end.

Some readers have kindly donated A$50 (currently equivalent to US$38) but I would be grateful for further donations. This elite band of brothers (no sisters except from Sweden, maybe :) will receive 12 Special Reports over the next 12 months. Software, like Microsoft 365, needs buying.
That is, once you have expressed interest by contacting me at
pete74730@yahoo.com.au I'll email an invoice to you. Once paid and using your email address I'll email you a Special Report on the 15th of each month.
The first Special Report will be sent to readers who have kindly donated on July 15, 2021 with the final Report sent on June 15, 2022.
Enough donations will keep Submarine Matters going. I can continue to provide the majority of articles/reports and replies to reader comments (which I need to attend to) free, on Submarine Matters.
This is instead of eventually paysiting SubMatts, or going offline, while I do a PhD, from July 2022.
Regards
Pete
